FRACTURES -

Fractures in the hand and wrist are very common. We treat all Finger/Phalanx, Metacarpal, Carpal (including Scaphoid), Wrist (including Distal Radial) fractures. These may require non-operative management with splints, casting or braces. They may also require surgical fixation.

DISLOCATIONS -

Dislocations of fingers are common and occur with sporting, occupational and home related injuries. Managed properly, most people have good functional recovery. Many injuries can be managed non-operatively with splinting and Hand Therapy, some will require surgery.

LACERATIONS -

Lacerations can be very superficial or they can be deep and involve complex structures like Tendons, Nerves, Arteries or joints. Deep injuries require exploration and repair of injured structures to obtain the best possible outcome.

ANIMAL AND HUMAN BITES -

Bites are extremely common and can have devastating consequences due to infection if left untreated. Infection can spread quickly, and patients can become very unwell / septic. Bites will require thorough washout to decrease risk of infection. Bites may require treatment in the operating theatre for debridement and washout.

INFECTIONS -

Most infections are due to open injuries including fractures, lacerations, bites or penetrating injuries. They can have devastating consequences requiring prolonged hospital admission for repeat surgeries and intravenous antibiotics if not treated correctly. Infection is always best treated early. If there is any doubt, patients should see there local doctor or emergency department.
